Yoga and Politics

I attended Baba Ramdev's "Yoga Vigyaan Shivir" in Bangalore on 23-26Th May. My inclination towards Yoga started 3 years back when my cholesterol level reduced by 19 points within a month by doing moderate breathing exercise recommended by Baba Ramdev.

Actually we find many people in north India and others parts of the country who are ardent followers of Baba Ramdev. Lot's of people claimed that they got cured from disease like diabetes, obesity, backache, high cholesterol levels, arthritis and even cancer but I never believed that until 2007. Actually I never questioned the power of Yoga even I haven't seen anybody with the obvious advantages. It was hard to make Baba Ramdev as a Guru. I think the reason is that we belonged to the same city actually same neighborhood. I hear ed countless stories from people around of young Baba Ramdev. People claimed that he has been a ordinary man working as a labourer in Hardiwar who later joined the Kripalu Ashram.
People said that actual Yoga Guru is Swami Balkrishnan but Baba Ramdev became famous because of his extra ordinary knack of communcating with the people.

Well, whatever be the stories I truly believe the he has been the man to spread Yoga awareness across India. Yoga originated from India and people across the world have been reaping its benefits.Only people in India wouldn't know what Yoga is all about
until Baba Ramdev made it popular and so simple that it can reach to the mass and benefit to the mass.

I met many people being cured from critical illness by doing the simple breathing exercises e.g. "KapalBhati","Anulom Vilom" etc. The trick is consistency.

As Yoga became popular so is the Guru Baba Ramdev and with popularity people get many avenues of making money. Baba Ramdev's pharmacy "Patanjali" is doing good business by selling Ayurvedic medicines to the people. While the Yoga is adopted by all rich and poor, medicines are generally too expensive to be afforded by the poor people.

With this increasing popularity Baba Ramdev got enthusiastic and laid the foundation of his own party "Bharat Swabhimaan" (India's Pride). His idea is that, with Yoga he can make every Indian healthy and strong, that is a possibility but his further vision is that all these Yogis (People practicing Yoga) can lead the India to new glories and make India a "world leader".

So out of four days Yoga camp, 3rd day was dedicated to promotion of the party "Bharat Swabhimaan".

While I strongly started believing in his Yoga knowledge and power and thank to him for spreading the knowledge of Yoga to so many people, I don't think he can do any good in politics.

In my point of view his vision is too limited and he lack the ability to see the world beyond India. I know that he has visited many countries and even he owns an Iceland somewhere in Europe. But until somebody see the whole world in a unison I don't think that somebody should lead part of it.

His lectures have been just mass appealing like those of traditional politic ans in India, who incite people on different agendas e.g. Religion, Area, Language etc.
Baba Ramdev is famous across India so he can not use any of these agendas. So he takes on other cultures and countries and by dis-regarding their practices.

This is a confusing mix of Yoga and Politics I will prefer both in different times.

  1. I too appreciate Baba Ramdev for may reasons including spreading Yoga to the world and talking patriotic. But i must say these days he is taking nuisance some of the times. Keeping Politics out of Yoga is one of the good idea in my opinion. He can live life log as a Hero Baba or he can become a political Villain in a matter if years and than fade.

  3. I liked the terms "Hero Baba" and "Political Villain". Two words in each term generally compliment each other :)
